Stepping is not just a whole body workout, but a sport in its own right.
Want to tighten your toosh? Maybe the hamstrings, quads and calves too? When trying to get fit, lose weight or tone up we’re often told to take the stairs rather than the elevator, and there’s definitely truth in that! Stair climbing is an intense activity both for the heart and leg muscles as you are carrying your bodyweight against gravity.
If time is of the essence and you want to burn calories in record time, stair climbing is the way to go. Experts say that you can burn approximately 300 calories for 30 minutes, but that depends on your body weight and the intensity at which you step. Other benefits of stair climbing include:
• A great cross-training activity
• Can burn up to twice the amount of calories of other activities
• Requires less time to do the same intensity of a workout
• Is a total body workout; cardiovascular and muscular endurance.
Of course, you don’t have to take to the streets to climb stairs. Why not try a step class or hit the stair climber in your local gym. There has to be a reason why these activities are popular at peak times, right? Step classes work on coordination and agility, while stair climbing machines can really take your fitness to new heights, with the range of intensities they can offer.
If you want to take your stepping a little further and you have a competitive streak within, you can try any (or all) of the four stair climbing races held in Australia – or around the globe – every year. For example, in Adelaide – in October – you can conquer a mere 600 steps (30 floors) up the Westpac Tower! Or, in November in Melbourne you can race up 1,642 stairs (88 floors) in the iconic Eureka Tower Challenge event (www.eurekaclimb.com.au)– now how’s that for a bit of heart stopping entertainment? Other Aussie events are held in Perth (in May) and Sydney (in July).
Avid stair climbing competitor and Fitness First member Chris Price says; ‘the benefits of stair climbing are quite phenomenal and you can get a great workout in a relatively short period of time’. Chris competed in his first race two years ago and is admittedly hooked on the sport, saying that it’s ‘something a little more unique – it’s a real challenge’. So real, in fact, that in 2013 Chris hopes to test his passion in the sport’s crème de la crème event – up the Empire State Building!
